Wearing a H.G & Sons jumper for 5 years
Share
Eight years ago I was travelling in New Zealand on a fishing trip with a friend - sleeping in the car and fishing the lakes and rivers with a friend.
We spent some time on a family friends farm in the back country, and they kindly gave to me an old jumper that had belonged to their grandfather. It had a few small holes in it and was clearly well-used, but had a robust feeling like it would live on for a few years.
I put that jumper on, at first a little guilty about wearing a dead mans clothes. "Better not to waste a useful thing", his grandkids told me. And since I never knew the man, it was convenient for the jumper to leave the farm with someone that never knew the man rather than have the family deal with the clothes.
Five years later, I was still wearing that jumper almost everyday. I wore it on fishing trips, to the pub, on boats, on dates, to music concerts - it went with me everywhere.
A fisherman's jumper is one of the most versatile items a man can own. It is a cornerstone of a minimalist wardrobe.
Can you think of an occasion, short of black tie, where you could not wear a fisherman's jumper? A wedding? You could wear it under a navy jacket if your suit was relaxed on the shoulders. To work? That crew neck is formal enough for you to look smart. On a fishing trip? The wool is perfect for keeping you just the right temperature.
What's more, you never need to wash it. In fact, it's better if you don't. If mine ever stinks of fish after a big trip, I just leave it on a railing in the wind for a few hours and it's good as new. Anything else can be sponged off.
That's why, when my girlfriend (at the time!) put my precious jumper in the wash and shrunk it - down to her own size - suspiciously - I was keen to replace it urgently.
Through friends of friends I eventually found the knitting mill, and was pleased to see they were still in operation. I reached out directly and asked if I could sell these via my family business H.G & Sons, because the whole family could see this was a vastly superior product and we wanted to sell them.
We went on to work together to produce a completely unique jumper (our extra warm range), which is available nowhere else in the world.
These are jumpers that have been lived in by the people selling them and are regarded by most of our customers as the best value jumpers they have ever purchased.
Our returns rate is around 6% and repeat orders of 2-3 jumpers are common.
